Raw Milk in Mumbai
I’ve been reading about concepts like raw milk, milk from grass fed cows, unpasteurized milk, grass fed dairy for so long that I’ve gotten quite carried away with the whole thing.
The thing is, like a lot of stuff written about in the real food – paleosphere, most of the issues are pretty much America or first world centric. The hormones injected in their livestock or the mass produced cattle feed, or heavily packaged, or processed industry is not so much of an issue in a country, which is 60% rural.
Having said that, processing and packaging is catching up here in a big way too. For instance, a couple of decades ago most homes in urban Mumbai used to have milk delivered by the doodhwala (or milkman) from a local dairy to their doorstep. Today the general perception is that Nestle milk in tetra packs, or slim milk is a ‘healthier’ option.
India is the largest producer of buffalo milk and this is not present in Western countries. Many countries in Asia are big producers of buffalo milk.
Buffalo milk has 100% more fat than cows milk as well as more proteins and more solids and is far creamier and dare I say it – more primal.
In Mumbai, there are plenty of large dairies, which house buffalos. For example, there is Kapoor dairy, which is behind VT station is dead in the center of South Bombay and supplies buffalo milk to various dairies in South and Central Mumbai.
My doodhwala who comes from a dairy in Colaba tells me that the animals eat grass. Of course they are not animals that freely roam countryside’s grazing, but they do eat grass and not corn meal and grains, though they are tied.
Whether they are treated humanely remains to be seen and I plan to make a trip to Kapoor dairy soon (since it’s in my back yard), but I am pretty sure the animals will be treated fairly well in this cow worshipping country.
Raw milk is milk directly from the animal, which is what I get at home. Whole fat, grass fed buffalo milk. HURRAH!
But ever since industrialization raw milk has been done away with and pasteurization has been believed to be better. What pasteurization is supposed to do is remove unwanted pathogens so that they don’t cause decease. But when the cow/buffalo is healthy, raw milk advocates say, there are practically no unwanted pathogens and once pasteurized milk is more or less dead.
Pre-industrialization when milk was mostly form the animal to home and most homes had access to the animals, pasteurization was not required. But today I am pretty wary of the milk coming into contact with feces of the animal and I prefer to bring my milk to a boil before consuming it. So I suppose what I eventually consume is pasteurized milk, something I am going to have to look into and change soon!
My sister in law got married last week and because of the number of wedding celebrations we had, I ran out of my store of frozen breast milk and in the last function I did not get a chance to express milk for N.
Since he has never had formula, I did not feel 8 months was the right time to start so I gave him 3-part buffalo milk mixed with 1 part water (as the amounts of solids in buffalo milk is a lot due to high fat and protein content), even though they say whole milk is to be given to a baby only after a year. But since I’m not one to follow the rules I gave it to him anyway. Anyhow when they say whole milk they talk primarily about cow milk.
I read this study and took a call to supplement N with buffalo milk.
He LOVED the milk. Which is great for me whenever I do turn my thoughts towards weaning.
For those interested, I get my milk home delivered (yes that’s my milk man in the picture) from Sita Ram dairy in Colaba. 022 22188958. But I’m pretty sure you will find a local dairy right by you in the city.
I recently came across this dairy : http://www.sardafarms.com/ which supplies raw milk directly to home. This is sold at a premium and they boast of hygienic conditions for milking. Read more here. The cows are fed a mix of grass, greens, oil seeds, hay, and water. On probing further I found out that the greens and grass also seems to be a mixture of grains and roughage. The they are nowhere near the grass fed cows we long for, the only advantage being the milk is supposed to be from the cow to your home with zero tampering. The cows are not injected or fed hormones either.
The purpose of this article is that we read so much about real food, farm to table, grass fed, local produce etc. all the time. But it’s all from American blogger perspectives and they have a really different set of issues than we do. If you look closer to home the answer is far simpler!
Its important though to ask questions, know where your food is coming from, look beyond the rules and mumbo jumbo, and buy local, fresh produce.
Read my take on whether or not we and our children should be consuming milk at all.
Thanks for reading. Where do you get your milk from, and do you think you’ll be searching for your local doodhwala soon?
great post.. also to add.. buffalo whole milk also makes great curds and can be used to make homemade ghee
Thanks! yes it’s the best for full fat yoghurt and ghee. simply remove and store the cream and every week you will have enough to make some homemade ghee. that’s what we do at home as well but it’s not enough to meet my ghee requirement! 🙂
So true miss that about INdia..nowadays people get packets delivered to home..sheesh what happened to the milkwaala..lol…
Love me some homemade ghee..but as IM stuck in the US..i make do with store bought ghee, coconut butter and almond milk..:) I only eat dahi I make at home for Dairy…
That’s awesome about india.! That and lots of things, but if you do find a local farmers market and strike up a conversation with the farmers I am pretty sure you will get access to amazing stuff. All of us need to do our bit to keep our eyes and ears open for good sources of food.
Oh we have searched high and low for a doodwala in bangalore but to no vain. My princess has been on milk (not formula) from when she turned 8 months and she loves it. I think kids adapt pretty easily.
Oh I was not aware that this is a mumbai phenomenon. I was pretty sure this is normal in most indian cities.
Good job switching over to milk. When I wean him I plan to stop milk completely though. Right now only when I am not present will I give him buffalo milk.
My baby is 11 months now and my ped has asked me to give her buffalo milk diluted 1: 4 as i have started weaning , no probs touchwood she accepts it very well. A very informative post Aloka …Keep writing 🙂
Hey sangeetha thanks for stopping by. Nice blog you have there 🙂
HI Aloka – any news on a good doodhwala in Tardeo?
hey! so the number i have posted on this blog post – sita ram dairy delivers to tardeo. i checked!
Hey Aloka,
I’m based out of Bombay and a social entrepreneur. I’ve been visiting some villages around Pune and after quite a few discussions with the farmers (them really poor) i’m thinking of shipping fresh raw milk to people in the cities(Pune to begin with) at a reasonable price. The USP is we want to pay the farmers around 30% more than what they are paid currently. We want to provide milk to customers at 80% of what they currently pay. Please let me know. the idea is to boost the farmers earning levels and at the same time deliver first class product to our customers at a very reasonable price. Please let me know if are aware places where this idea can be implemented in Pune/Bombay. We are looking for apartments/townships so that we dont incur heavy costs in distribution.
Hi, email me. I
M not sure what your question is !
Thanks for the lovely post. We need more raw milk drinkers! Did you get a chance to visit your Colaba dairy? My concerns are with whether the animals in Mumbai dairies are stressed and/or fed antibiotics and growth hormones to keep milk supply high.
Im sorry to say that you are DEEPLY mistaken and misguided. The whole point of Raw unpasteurized milk is that it contains all the beneficial bacteria and enzymes which are healthy and which enable you to process and digest all the beneficial elements in the milk as mother nature provided them. If the cow is healthy and fed a correct diet (grass fed on pasture) then the milk is perfectly healthy. By heat treating it you are destroying the milk and it is no longer healthy. Also the elements within the milk are at certain ratio’s which make them absorbable e.g magnesium-calcium. Once pasteurized this ratio will change and the benefits of these two mineral are no longer absorbable.
You really should do more research on pasteurization before you advocate such an unhealthy practice to others under the guise of paleo and being primal which it clearly is NOT.
Hi,
It would have been nice if you read the post before you commented.
I said I prefer to pasteurize because I am wary about milk coming in contact with the feces of the buffalo. It’s just me. I am a little finicky. But I think raw milk without pasteurisation is the way to go and you or anyone else reading this article can have access to it if you so wish.
The buffaloes are not hundred percent grass fed though they are healthy but in an idea world all the animals would be raised grazing on green pasteurs grazing on grass all day without having hormones injected into their bodies. Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world and as a mother I am a little wary.
Having said that, raw buffalo milk is available in mumbai and you or anyone else who wants it can have it completely raw and Its awesome, That’s the purpose of this article.
I did read the post. And i addressed what you wrote
quote
” ever since industrialization raw milk has been done away with and pasteurization is the way to go. What pasteurization does is remove unwanted pathogens so that they are unlikely to cause disease.”
“pasteurization is the way to go”
I’m sorry if i came across a little strong, but the health of others and your child is a matter of importance is it not?
When the cow/buffalo is healthy, there are practically no unwanted pathogens. What you are doing when you pasteurize it is to kill all the good bacteria, disrupt the natural structure of the fat, Destroy the enzymes. And unbalance the ratio of nutrients in the milk so that they are UNABSORBABLE. if you are unable to obtain raw milk from healthy cows which hasn’t come into contact with faeces then you simply shouldn’t drink it. It’s not healthy for anyone nor your own child.
PASTEURIZED MILK = DEAD MILK….. don’t believe? pasteurize the milk and then leave it for 5-7 days ..see if it ferments as Raw natural milk does. It wont because you have killed it.
Again, i wish you all the best , and i hope you research it further for the sake of your friends and family. And thank you for making people conscious about this in the first place.
Hi, that’s a fair point. Will look into this. If its better not to drink milk than drink raw milk then yes maybe I should research that aspect and update this post.
Also as of now my child only drinks breast milk and once I wean I plan to stop feeding milk altogether. Also I will rephrase the line that you have quoted.
What I meant was industrlization happened and milk was pasteurised because of the reasons mentioned above but I don’t agree that it’s better for milk at all. I just meant that maybe in the current context of how milk is consumed and how livestock is maintained it maybe better. But what you’re saying about now consuming milk unless its raw is definitely worth looking into.
Thanks for the comment!
I have updated the article after your input. thanks so much for bringing this to my notice. i have been advocating pasteurized milk though this was never my intention. thanks for the comments!

Hi Aloka
Do you subscribe sarda farms milk? How is it?
hello aloka,
i was looking for a source of raw milk in the colaba bus station area, when i came across your blog. thank you for the telephone number of the sita ram dairy. i called up the dairy, and found, that though, i used to buy curds from that dairy before, i had not known the name of the dairy and did not know, that they supplied raw milk,
i managed to buy 1/2 a litre of raw milk and when i tasted it, I felt so good, that i drank all of it at one time. i now plan to buy raw milk from sita ram dairy on a regular basis.
i am 65 years old and when i was about 50 years of age, i used to weigh 104 kgs. and was very heavily diabetic and took insulin and other medications. ketones in the urine tests showed +++.
today, after taking tips from the paleo diet, i weigh 65 kgs. My diabetes has disappeared and i take absolutely no medications at all. my trouser waist size used to be 45 inches. i now wear 32 inch trousers.
i can now see the top 2 abs in the mirror and plan to exercise and eat well and hope to see the remaining 4 abs. i have lost so much fat,
that, the veins on my forearms have begun to stand out.
thank you for the nice articles you write and for the valuable information. keep up the good work.

hello guys, I am having fresh cow milk from pride of cows. its such a good quality n fresh milk.
Visit : http://www.prideofcows.com n order your milk at your door
Hey Aloka. I have not read all the conversations but do look into A1 and A2 milk. I’m saying because you recommended sarda farms which supplies A1 cows milk which is not healthy. Just thought I should let you know since A1 milk is harmful especially for kids
ok thanks! will look it up right away!
Even pride of cows is A1 milk. Please do make sure it’s desi cows milk if you are keen on trying cows milk else diluted buffalo’s milk is preferable.
